Mereka tidak hanya skeptis terhadap teknologi, tetapi benar-benar menolak untuk menggunakannya dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Misalnya saja masyarakat Baduy Dalam di Indonesia dan komunitas Mennonite di Argentina.
Sekilas, keputusan mereka, hidup tanpa internet, mungkin tampak kuno atau ketinggalan zaman. Tapi sebenarnya, penolakan itu bukan karena mereka tidak paham teknologi, melainkan karena itu adalah pilihan sadar.
Mereka ingin menjaga nilai-nilai budaya dan tradisi yang mereka anggap lebih penting daripada kenyamanan atau kemudahan yang ditawarkan teknologi modern. Ini pilihan luhur!
Kalau kita melihat dari sudut pandang teori representasi sosial (Serge Moscovici, 1961), kita bisa lebih memahami alasan di balik sikap ini. Teori ini menjelaskan bagaimana sekelompok orang membentuk makna bersama terhadap suatu hal, yang dalam hal ini, teknologi dan internet.
Bagi kebanyakan masyarakat modern, internet dianggap alat penting yang mempermudah hidup. Tapi bagi masyarakat seperti Baduy Dalam dan Mennonite, internet justru dianggap sebagai ancaman terhadap nilai-nilai yang sudah lama mereka pegang.
Masyarakat Baduy, khususnya Baduy Dalam, terkenal karena keteguhan mereka dalam menjaga adat. Mereka menolak listrik, kendaraan, bahkan sabun kimia—apalagi internet. Bagi mereka, hidup sederhana dan dekat dengan alam adalah cara terbaik untuk menjaga keseimbangan hidup.
Teknologi dianggap bisa merusak hubungan mereka dengan alam dan mengganggu aturan adat yang telah diwariskan secara turun-temurun. Penolakan ini bukan sekadar soal tidak mau pakai ponsel atau Wi-Fi.
Lebih dari itu, ini adalah bentuk resistensi sosial, cara mereka menyatakan bahwa mereka berbeda, dan mereka memilih untuk tetap berbeda. Menolak teknologi adalah cara mereka mempertahankan identitas kolektif di tengah dunia yang makin seragam.
Sementara itu, Masyarakat Mennonite di Argentina punya sikap yang mirip, meskipun dasarnya berbeda. Mereka menolak banyak bentuk teknologi karena alasan agama.
Kehidupan mereka sangat diatur oleh nilai-nilai keimanan, yang mendorong kesederhanaan dan keterpisahan dari dunia luar. Mereka percaya bahwa teknologi bisa membawa pengaruh buruk yang mengancam moral dan ketertiban komunitas.

Artinya, dalam komunitas ini sedang berlangsung proses negosiasi antara menjaga tradisi dan beradaptasi secara selektif dengan zaman. Ini menunjukkan bahwa makna teknologi bisa berubah tergantung konteks sosial dan kebutuhan.
Yang menarik dari realitas ini adalah, penolakan terhadap teknologi ini bukan berarti mereka anti-perubahan. Justru melalui penolakan tersebut, mereka menunjukkan kemampuan untuk memilih dan memilah apa yang sesuai dengan nilai mereka.
Ini adalah bentuk pengolahan makna, seperti yang dijelaskan dalam teori representasi sosial: bahwa setiap kelompok punya hak untuk menentukan apa arti sebuah hal bagi mereka, bukan sekadar mengikuti arus mayoritas.
Maka dari itu, di era digital ini, kita sering menganggap teknologi sebagai solusi untuk segala hal. Tapi kisah Baduy dan Mennonite mengingatkan kita bahwa tidak semua hal harus diikuti.
Kadang, menolak bisa menjadi cara untuk tetap teguh pada nilai dan identitas. Mereka adalah bukti bahwa di balik gemerlap modernisasi, masih ada ruang bagi gaya hidup yang berbeda—dan itu sah-sah saja.
Menolak internet bukan berarti tidak cerdas atau kolot. Bukan! Bisa jadi, itu justru bentuk kecerdasan sosial dan budaya, dimana masyarakatnya tahu apa yang penting untuk diri dan komunitas, serta berani menjaga itu meski dunia terus berubah.
Dalam era media baru, penolakan seperti ini bukan kelemahan, melainkan bentuk keteguhan terhadap makna hidup yang mereka yakini. Karena itu budaya mereka tetap hidup.
Suku Baduy Dalam di Indonesia
Suku Baduy, yang tinggal hanya sekitar 150 km dari Jakarta, adalah contoh nyata bahwa kesederhanaan bukan bentuk kemunduran, tapi pilihan sadar yang bermakna. Di saat dunia berlomba mengadopsi teknologi terbaru, Suku Baduy Dalam justru memilih memeluk tradisi.
Mereka menolak kendaraan bermotor, listrik, bahkan dokumen formal seperti KTP. Tidak ada kamera, tidak ada unggahan media sosial. Mereka hidup tanpa kebutuhan untuk menunjukkan diri kepada dunia luar.
Sementara itu, banyak dari kita hidup dalam budaya yang disebut participatory culture atau budaya partisipatif. Menurut Henry Jenkins (2003), di era ini semua orang bisa menjadi kreator, bukan sekadar konsumen.
Kita berlomba membuat konten, berbagi opini, dan menampilkan hidup ke dunia digital. Partisipasi di media dianggap sebagai bentuk eksistensi. Semakin sering tampil, semakin “ada”. Tapi di Baduy, tidak ada dorongan untuk menciptakan citra. Hidup mereka diukur bukan dari seberapa viral, tetapi dari harmoni, kesadaran, dan keberlanjutan.
Sosiolog Manuel Castells (1996) menyebut zaman kita sebagai masyarakat jejaring (network society), masyarakat yang dibentuk oleh jaringan digital. Dalam dunia ini, yang terkoneksi dianggap maju. Yang tidak, sering dicap tertinggal. Tapi apakah koneksi digital adalah satu-satunya ukuran kemajuan?
Masyarakat Baduy Dalam, sering dianggap “tertinggal”. Padahal, mereka tidak menolak teknologi karena takut atau tidak tahu, tetapi karena sadar: tidak semua kemajuan membawa ketenangan. Masyarakat Baduy Dalam tidak membagi perhatian antara notifikasi dan percakapan nyata. Mereka menenun dengan penuh kesadaran, menanam dengan ketekunan, berbicara dengan kehadiran penuh. Barangkali, justru di tengah dunia yang serba cepat ini, kita perlu belajar memperlambat. Belajar hadir.
Marshall McLuhan (1964) pernah berkata, “The medium is the message.” Artinya, bukan hanya isi pesan yang penting, tetapi media tempat pesan itu disampaikan juga membentuk cara kita berpikir dan merasakan. Saat media sosial menjadi pusat hidup, kita mudah terdistraksi. Kita terbiasa berpindah dari satu postingan ke postingan lain, mulai dari konten kebahagiaan hingga kesedihan, kelucuan dan kepiluhan, tanpa benar-benar merasakannya.
Suku Baduy Dalam, sebaliknya, memilih hidup dengan nilai tetap yang diwariskan turun-temurun. Mereka tidak terpengaruh tren. Mereka bukan reaktif, tapi reflektif. Bukan hanya hidup di alam, tapi hidup bersama alam.
Hidup bersama alam bukan anti-kemajuan. Mereka hanya memiliki definisi kemajuan yang berbeda. Mereka tidak mengejar “lebih banyak”, tapi cukup: cukup makan dari ladang, cukup air dari sungai, cukup relasi tanpa perantara layar. Bagi mereka, keberhasilan bukan diukur dari pertumbuhan ekonomi, tapi dari keseimbangan hidup.
Ironisnya, banyak dari kita datang ke Baduy Dalam setiap tahun, untuk “detoks digital”, berwisata mencari keheningan, atau sekadar mencari pemandangan eksotis untuk diunggah. Tapi penting untuk diingat: Suku Baduy bukan objek wisata. Mereka manusia dengan nilai hidup yang layak dihormati, bukan pelarian dari modernitas.
Mereka adalah pengingat arah, tentang cara hidup yang mungkin sudah lama kita lupakan. Karena itu, di dunia yang semakin mirip satu sama lain, keberanian untuk berbeda demi nilai hidup adalah sesuatu yang langka. Suku Baduy adalah contoh bahwa kita bisa memilih hidup yang selaras dengan alam, nilai, dan kesadaran. Mereka bukan simbol masa lalu, tapi pengingat masa depan yang lebih manusiawi.
