Karawang, Wartacana.com – Meskipun tak ada lalu lalang kendaraan, jembatan tua itu tetap berdiri tenang. Namanya, Jembatan Gantung Telukjambe. Begitu masyarakat sekitar menyebutnya.
Bukan sekadar besi tua yang membentang di atas Sungai Citarum, Jembatan Gantung Telukjambe adalah saksi tiga generasi. Kini, meski tak lagi dilewati kendaraan, jembatan itu menjadi simbol sejarah dan saksi hidup perjalanan Karawang dari waktu ke waktu.
Jembatan Gantung Telukjambe terletak di Kecamatan Telukjambe Timur, Kabupaten Karawang. Dibangun sejak tahun 1960, jembatan ini merupakan jembatan penghubung yang dulunya menjadi akses utama masyarakat antar wilayah yang terputus Sungai Citarum.
Saat ini jembatan tersebut sudah tak lagi difungsikan untuk kendaraan bermotor. Kalaupun ada yang lewat, biasanya hanya pejalan kaki dan pengguna sepeda.
Peletakan batu pertama dilakukan pada 13 Oktober 1953, dan peresmiannya dilaksanakan pada 8 Februari 1960. Menurut warga setempat, jembatan ini dibangun dengan cara manual oleh tenaga lokal.
Dahulu, masyarakat harus menggunakan perahu untuk menyeberang sebelum jembatan ini berdiri. Yayan (56 tahun), warga asli Telukjambe, menyebut jembatan ini sebagai, Jembatan Tiga Generasi.
Julukan tersebut disematkan karena keberadaannya telah melintasi usia lebih dari 60 tahun, setara dengan tiga generasi masyarakat. “Disebut Jembatan Tiga Generasi karena sudah berdiri lebih dari 60 tahun. Kalau dihitung, satu generasi itu 20 tahun, jadi sekarang sudah masuk generasi ketiga,” katanya pada Tim Mahasiswa Ilmu Komunikasi, Unsika.
Yayan mengatakan, sebelum jembatan ini dibangun, warga hanya bisa menyeberangi Sungai Citarum dengan perahu atau rakit. Jembatan ini menjadi jalur vital, bahkan disebut sebagai jembatan pertama di Karawang yang menghubungkan wilayah Telukjambe dan Karawang Kota.
Menurut Jualianto Agung Nugroho, Kepala Seksi Jalan dan Jembatan Dinas PUPR Karawang, struktur jembatan telah melewati batas usia pakai infrastruktur, yakni 50 tahun. Secara teknis, jembatan dengan usia setua itu tidak lagi layak digunakan untuk kendaraan berat.
Untuk mencegah risiko kecelakaan, pihak dinas memasang portal dan rantai pengaman. “Kalau dipaksakan, risikonya besar. Kami tutup, bukan karena tak dibutuhkan, tapi demi keselamatan,” ujar Agung saat ditemui di kantor Dinas PUPR Karawang, Senin, 5 Mei 2025.
Ia menambahkan bahwa belum ada rencana pembongkaran jembatan, karena keberadaannya dianggap sebagai bagian dari warisan bersejarah yang masih dipertahankan. “Jembatan ini secara fungsi memang sudah ditutup, tapi belum ada rencana pembongkaran karena dianggap sebagai bagian dari warisan bersejarah,” tegasnya.
Fungsinya hanya digunakan untuk lalu lintas ringan. Struktur bawah dan sling penyangga menunjukkan tanda-tanda keusangan. Pemerintah melakukan pemeliharaan minor seperti pengecatan dan penggantian bantalan, namun belum pernah dilakukan rehabilitasi menyeluruh.
Untuk kendaraan roda dua pun kini sudah dilarang melintas, diperkuat dengan pemasangan tiang besi di kedua ujung jembatan. “Satu tahun terakhir, jembatan benar-benar hanya diperuntukkan untuk pejalan kaki dan sepeda, kendaraan ringan roda dua seperti motor pun tidak diizinkan lewat. Di pasang tiang-tiang besi diarea bibir jembatan untuk menghalangi motor yang akan melintas.,” ujar Yayan (56 tahun), warga sekitar jembatan gantung.
Meski fungsinya telah digantikan oleh jembatan baru yang dibangun di sebelahnya, Jembatan Gantung Telukjambe belum akan dibongkar. Pemerintah belum memiliki rencana untuk merobohkannya dan memilih mempertahankan jembatan ini sebagai ikon sejarah.
Menurut Kepala Seksi Jalan dan Jembatan Dinas PUPR Karawang, Jualianto Agung, pihaknya sudah menyiapkan beberapa jembatan alternatif yang bisa digunakan untuk menyebrang. Khususnya untuk wilayah Johar dan Teluk Jambe agar masih tersambung.
“Kami bangun jembatan di tahun 2023 yaitu jembatan Rumambe untuk mengakomodir agar semua orang tidak lewat satu jalur saja,” ujarnya ketika diwawancara.
Kemudian ada juga beberapa jembatan yang viral seperti jembatan apung, walaupun itu dikelola oleh perorangan. “Itu salah satu upaya untuk memindahkan kapasitas yang sudah terpenuhi di Jembatan Teluk Jambe, jadi di bangunlah jembatan di wilayah lain,” jelasnya.
Jembatan Gantung Telukjambe mungkin tak lagi menjadi lintasan utama kendaraan, namun sejarah panjang dan peran vitalnya dalam membentuk mobilitas masyarakat Karawang tak bisa dipungkiri.
“Jembatan ini sudah menjadi cagar budaya Karawang, pemerintah daerah senantiasa melakukan perbaikan dan rehabilitas infrastruktur jembatan,” kata Yayan (56 tahun), warga sekitar jembatan gantung.
